Snow Removal Business

FOR SALE

Due to changing time constraints of my full time job, my part time business has got to go.

I have been moving snow for the Virginia Department of Transportation for thirteen years.  I don't want to stop, but my full time job has added responsibilities that prevent me from taking time off when it snows.

This is a pair of 1968 Oshkosh MB-2 Aircraft towing tractors, reconfigured for snow removal.  They are rated for ground handling of aircraft up to 500,000 pounds.  They were built for the Air Force in a production run of fewer than 40 units.  Another run in 1977 produced fewer than 30 more, with smaller engines.

Both trucks have 245 HP Caterpillar 1673-B engines, Twin-Disc transmissions with four forward and one reverse speeds and Oshkosh planetary axles with Rockwell carriers running 4.10 gears.  Top speed is around 30 MPH.

They are 4WD AND 4 wheel steer.  You can select from front steer only or 4 wheel steer with a 17 ½ foot turning radius (2 feet tighter than a 2 wheel drive Dodge 1500 short bed  standard cab pickup.  Even Chevrolet's 1500 Silverado with their 'Quadrasteer' needs more room.)  Oblique steering lets you drive sideways.

These things will out push even the heaviest grader while out maneuvering a small pickup.  They are just as good on open roads, back roads or residential neighborhoods.

Live hydraulics control the lift and turn the blade, no need to worry about electric lifts killing your electrical system.  Both trucks have 165 amp Leece-Neville alternators to keep the lights bright while you're working in the dark.  They also have electrically heated mirrors to keep the ice off.

Both trucks have 445/65R22.5 Michelin XZL radial tires with under 5,000 miles on them.  For information on the tires, download the data sheet here    Michelin XZL

I have the full set of manuals for these trucks, Parts, Operation and Overhaul, including contact information for any part needed.  I also have the engine manual from Caterpillar on two CD's.  There has never been a problem getting parts.  The parts manual has the manufacturer's original part number for everything on the trucks down to the last bolt.  Most of the numbers are unchanged, but Caterpillar, Twin-Disc and Oshkosh have the cross over numbers when needed.

Shipping is no problem for these trucks.  They will fit together on a 50 ton or better lowboy.  Actual combined weight will be about 36 tons.  You can use the hauler of your choice.  I purchased Titanic in Hawaii and had it shipped to LA.  From there it came to Virginia with Bowers Trucking.  I was very happy with their service.

Three complete axle assemblies, new in crates.

These include everything .... tie rods, steering rams, brakes and planetary units.  These three axles cost the government $80,000 in 1984.

Both trucks, all three axles and the rest of the spare parts I have collected over the years go for

$50,000 USD

The Beast lost oil due to a line leaking and the pickup must have sucked air on a slope.  It still has normal oil pressure but now has a knock in the bottom end.  It drove on and off the lowboy that hauled it home and up my driveway with no change in the knock, power or oil pressure.  It probably just needs a set of bearings rolled in.  Since I don’t have the time to fix it, which is the only reason I’m even considering selling, I’ve lowered the price.

$25,000 USD takes the whole package

Shipping not included.  Trucks are located near Leesburg, VA on paved road with access to interstate highways.

The blades shown on the photos are state property, and do not go with the trucks.  VDOT has indicated an interest in keeping these trucks under contract if the buyer is local.  I can't speak to other states or other parts of Virginia, but in this area they have been under contract for $135/hr each for several years.

I have two email addresses linked here, which is the easiest way to ask detailed questions.  I can also be reached at 571-436-4139.
